Stop or slow down the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries
Saint-Gobain, with its companies Tapes Solutions, Saint-Gobain Research and HKO Trust the Experts, offers simulations, products and customized solutions to contain the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries with the aim of stopping thermal runaway. A special feature is that the products are based on polyurethane, silicone and fibers. With the properties of excellent damping and thermal stability up to 1,200°C, these solutions have been used in series production by several OEMs for several years. The applications are
To separate the individual cells during their service life with pressure forces that are as constant as possible in order to store the cells over their entire service life.
To protect the passengers in the vehicle to not only achieve the minimum target of 5 minutes, but to far exceed it. This is achieved by protecting the modules from each other to reduce thermal spread at module level. In addition, our products help to protect the battery systems from external fires outside the enclosure.
To protect the battery system management in the event of thermal runaway of the lithium-ion cell.
New products under development are products for filtering coarse glowing particles in the event of thermal dispersion. Our products also filter particles that are only a few nanometers to micrometers in size and help to reduce toxic gases and smoke.
All of this helps to reduce and prevent the spread of flames and hazardous substances from the battery housing. The aim is to minimize and, as far as possible, contain the danger to outsiders and the occupants of the vehicle.
Curriculum vitae
After completing his school education, Ulrich Stude completed an apprenticeship as a lathe operator. From 1987 to 1992, he completed an evening course at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences to qualify as a mechanical engineer (FH). He began his professional career as sales manager from August 1992 to July 2001, where he managed sales for several federal states in the construction site sector, particularly in the screed and plaster sector.
From August 2001 to August 2004, he worked as a product manager at DBW Deutsche Basalt Werke Bovenden, focusing on fiberglass needle mats. Since August 2004, he has worked at Beuhko Fasertechnik GmbH in Leinefelde, Thuringia, where he was plant manager for 15 years. Since 2019, he has taken on the role of Business Development Manager at Saint-Gobain Adfors HKO, focusing on the market for high-temperature insulation and passive fire protection against thermal spread.
