Development of fast-charging protocols through the use of high-precision coulometry

In the fast-growing battery market, there is a great need for experimental tools that facilitate the design, optimization and long-term validation of fast-charging protocols.

High-precision coulometry can (1) detect the occurrence of lithium deposition and (2) quantify even small amounts of capacity loss caused by lithium deposition. We demonstrate a method to (1) systematically determine the maximum fast-charging capabilities of lithium-ion cells and (2) find an appropriate balance between charging time and induced degradation.

Curriculum vitae

Dr. Benjamin Strehle, who earned his PhD in lithium-ion battery research at the Technical University of Munich under the supervision of Prof. Hubert Gasteiger, has been working as a Battery Testing Engineer at Battery Dynamics since 2022. In this role, he works primarily with the automotive industry.
